The southwest is a magical place of stone and light. With little rain, the sky is the bluest blue. It is no wonder that the favored stone for jewelry here is turquoise. Earth tones of red and yellow and brown dominate the vast landscape. Complex cultures have existed here long before Europeans discovered this continent. Their ancient dwellings and art are visible everywhere. I have loved this area from the first time I saw it nearly 50 years ago.
Water is a very precious here. It is found only in the highest mountains or in the rivers that flow from these mountains. The clear and swiftly flowing mountain streams are beautiful in themselves and they support a profusion of wildflowers.
I have been making photographs for almost 50 years. I learned my B&W craft at graduate school where I was expected to be a competent photographer. I loved it and I have continued to make photographs ever since. I continue to attend photography workshops to improve my art and craft.
This exhibit is the intersection of my love of photography and my love of this part of our country. I am delighted to team up with B. G. Burr, a boyhood friend from Madison County, Ohio. I would like to thank B. G., Andrea Chavez and the Las Lunes Museum for the wonderful opportunity. This set of images just scratches the surface of the beauty and wonder that exists here and I hope you enjoy them.
